Istanbul Airports
Istanbul Ataturk Airport (IST)
Istanbul Airport has a brand new international terminal active since year 2000, however new extensions made recently and the capacity of the terminal is now over 20 million passengers in a year. The airport is one of the newest airports in Europe and also representing the modern face of Turkiye. Ataturk Airport is located in Yesilkoy, on the European side of Istanbul and It is 28 kilometers to the city center.

Arriving to Istanbul airport is relatively easy after the new Metro connection to the Airport. As the city grews larger and larger due to high traffic volume its always risky to be jamned in the traffic and Metro alternative seems to be the most convenient one. Currently the travel alternatives to the airport are as follows.

Metro: Metro line which is operating from Aksaray to the Istanbul Airport is the easiest alternative. Airport is the last stop and easy to catch up. If you are staying around Aksaray, you can get the Metro from the first stop. If you are staying around Sultanahmet, Laleli, Eminonu, Beyazit or Cemberlitas, than you shall take the "Eminonu - Zeytinburnu" tram. The tram starts from Eminonu stops at Sultanahmet, Beyazit, Laleli and than leads to Topkapi. The last stop of this route is Zeytinburnu and just from this stop there is a connection to Aksary - Airport metro line at Zeytinburnu. After you get off at Zeytinburnu, just climb the stairs and connect the metro line. Total travel time from Eminonu to Airport shall be around 40-45 minutes and will cost 2 tokens ( Less than 2 USD)

Havas Bus Services: Havas is a private bus/coach service and organising regular bus services to the Airport from several main locations of Istanbul. Havas buses leaves from Taksim, Etiler, Bakirkoy and Kozyatagi. If you are staying around Taksim and Beyoglu area Hotels than Havas buses are the best option to travel to the airport. Etiler is the center of Business District, Bakirkoy is the main Seabus port and Kozyatagi is the main stop of Havas on the Anatolian side of Istanbul.

Taksim - Airport: Havas buses departs every half an hour from Taksim to Airport on 06:00 to 23:00 hrs and every hour from 23:00 to 06:00. Buses departs in front of the Istanbul Municipality art showroom, which is 20-30 meters from the THY ticket sales office ( located in the center of Taksim square). Travel time is around 40 minutes and cost is 10 TL ( ~5 €)

Kozyatagi - Airport : If you are staying on the Asian side of Istanbul than you can reach the airport via Havas service from Kozyatağı. Havas buses departs every hour from Kozyatagi on 04:00 to 24:00. No buses after midnite. Buses departs from Havas terminal at Kozyatagi ( Ataturk cad No:22) . Travel time is 1-1,5 hrs and travel cost is 17 TL ( ~8 €).

Bakirkoy - Airport : If you are staying on the Asian side of Istanbul than you can also reach the airport via taking a fast ferry (Catamaran) from Kadikoy or Bostanci to Bakirkoy and take a Havas service from Bakirkoyı. Fast Ferries, which are also called as Seabuses, operates between Bostanci- Kadikoy and Bakirkoy. Havas buses departs 20 minutes after each Seabus. If you are staying around Merter and Bakirkoy, you can also use this service. Travel time is 15-20 minutes and travel cost is 5 YTL ( ~2.5 €).

Taxis: One other travel option is travelling via a taxi to the airport. If you are staying in a hotel, your hotel can book you a taxi in advance. Finding a taxi in Istanbul is relatively easy except heavy rainy days and business exit hours. Taxi cost from Sultanahmet area to the airport shall be around 20-25 YTL ( ~15 €), From Taksim to Airport it shall be around 25-30 YTL. Night Tariff is 50% more.

Private Shuttle Services: Especially in the Sultanahmet area, some travel agencies are organising shuttle services to the Airport. This is most of the times appears to be an easy and cheap alternative. The buses have a fix departing hour and they organize a minibus from Sultanahmet direct to the Airport. Especially if you have an early leaving plane check for these agencies mainly located near St Sophia and Basilica Cistern. Travel time is 25-40 minutes and cost is changing from 3-5 € per person.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
Sabiha Gokcen Airport is 40km (25 miles) from the city center, and located on the Asian side of Istanbul. It is Turkey's newest international airport, and opened in 2001. The airport is used mainly for a sub to Ataturk airport. International air traffic is very low. The airport is used mainly for charter flights and some cargo flights are also operating from here.

As Sabiha Gokcen Airport is a sub airport arriving to airport is rather difficult than Ataturk Airport. There is no Metro or Train connection to the Airport and currently only alternatives are Bus Shuttles and Taxis.

Buses: Recently Municipal buses started to and from Sabiha Gokcen airport due to inceased number of flights and passengers. Bus lines E-9, and E10 are operating to the Airport. These express buses asks for two tickets, costing 2,6 YTL (2 USD)

E-9: Buses to and from Bostanci. There is a bus leaving from SAW every Hour from 04:00 to 24:00 and also at 01:00, 01:45 & 02:45.

Havas Shuttle Buses: Havas is organising scheduled bus services to Sabiha Gokcen airport from three different centers of Istanbul. As Sabiha gokcen airport is far from the city center, you should consider the travel time.

Buses followes the high way and reaches to SAW airport. Buses departs at the following hours, from 04:00 to 10:00 every Hour, from 13:00 to 21:00 every hour and at 23:00 hrs. Travel time around 45 minutes and Cost is 5,5 YTL (3 €).

4. Levent - Sabiha Gokcen: Havas Buses also departs from 4. Levent, in front of the YKB Plaza at 4.Levent, the business district. These buses carry passengers from the Asian side of Istanbul. Taksim - Sabiha Gokcen: There is a Havas Bus service from Taksim to Sabiha Gokcen also. But there are only two buses daily which makes this line less effective. Buses departs at 07:30 and 17:30 from Taksim. Travel time around 1-1,5 hour and Cost is 8,5 YTL (5 €).

Pegasus Shuttle Buses: Pegasus is a private domestic flight company which is using Sabiha Gokcen airport as their hub. Pegasus is also organising special bus services for their passengers and other travellers.
